From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.
Ian at Gordon Barber couldn't have been kinder or more helpful. He guided Mum and I through the whole process. I couldn't recommend them highly enough. Thank you.
The service we received for mums funeral was excellent, we always use Gordon Barber and they have never been anything but dignified and helpful in all aspects
We had a very professional and very caring team. Both Bev and Ian went over and above from start to finish in every way. They were so sympathetic and always there for emotional encounters. On the funeral day it was absolutely perfect in every way. Massive Thank you to Bev and Ian they were the best all the way through. Also a big thank you to the rest of the staff on the day of the funeral. Harveys comes very highly recommended.
I cannot recommend Gordon Barbers in Costessy enough. Ian and his team went above and beyond in their care for our loved one, and his partner and family. We were given time and understanding, able to visit our loved one whenever we wanted- including Christmas day. The team on the day of the funeral were so respectful and we felt listened to. The memory box was totally unexpected and a really special touch. Above all we felt that the person we had lost was looked after and our requests listened to and respected. Thank you so much for making a terrible time a little easier.
The care, personal attention, dignity and professionalism from Ian was commendable, a true example of excellent customer service.
