From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.
Kind, compassionate and caring, nothing was too much trouble at all for Louise and Maria. Dealt with the death of my father in the most respectful of ways that took all the pressure and stress away from us. We were given a packet of forget me not seeds to plant in his honour, such a wonderful gesture from a lovely team.
Faultless - a great team who were invaluable to me in organising my father's funeral. Louise in particular was amazing. Thank you.
From the first phone call to the last moments by the graveside; I can honestly say the service provided by Gordon Barber was superb, and echo the many positive comments about Celia.
The team went above and beyond to help us through a very difficult time.
Thank you!
Gordon Barber of Eaton. Simply the best.
We could not have found a better funeral directors to lay our father to rest. Celia listened to what our father had requested and talked through everything with us. She was so kind. Michael Palmer visited us before the funeral to introduce himself. He made sure the day went perfectly. The care and respect he and the other funeral staff showed our father was incredible. The support we were given was also much appreciated. Thank you all.
Gordon Barbers recently acted as funeral director for our dearest brother (and son). As a family we wanted to write a review to express our immense gratitude to everyone at Gordon Barber who we interacted with in the weeks leading up to the funeral and on the day.
We primarily dealt with Tim who was faultless, dealing with our family to an exceptionally high standard every step of the way, although each person of the team we dealt with mirrored the same excellent service. Our experience of GB’s is of a professional business which shows such empathy, thoughtfulness, and attention to detail, to help bereaved families through the torture of loss and to ensure their loved ones receive the very best send off.
In particular we wished to commend Tim and the GB team for providing such personable, caring, and thoughtful service, we will be forever grateful.
Thank you on behalf of the Walker family.
